Even stars are ordinary - YoM Day 200

Six months ago I began a journey of practicing mindfulness every day and we've reached day 200. Yesterday, I talked about there always being opportunities waiting for us to take them. Today's a new day.
"Just because people are doing extraordinary things doesn't mean they're not ordinary people." - Laird Hamilton
I love music. I've especially been interested in the music in video games and its evolution. From the simple 8-bit tunes of the NES generation to the fully-orchestrated of modern games, there have been so many amazing people involved in nearly 35 years of entertainment. I've followed some artists, such as Donna Burke and have had the honor of talking to them online and hearing their stories are amazing.

I remember Donna posting that she met Mark Hamill, who I also love, and commenting how awesome that was and asked what it was like to meet him. I said that I would probably nerd out a bit if I did since his work has been so inspiring to me (I'd probably geek out a bit if I met Donna, too). She responded saying that "he's just a normal bloke like anyone else" and those words really stuck with me.

It's easy to idolize those who have had an impact on us, especially when they've built an amazing portfolio, so we sometimes we forget that we're all just people. Yes, these people have done great things, but they have problems, dreams, desires, likes, etc. just like anyone else. They might like to sleep in, eat ice cream, and play video games in their free time or maybe they're workaholics and love to work on themselves all of the time (which might explain their success). Just because they're stars doesn't mean they can't enjoy the little things like anyone else.

The opposite is true, too. You have people who have lost everything and feel like their existence is meaningless. You might meet people who can't seem to function in society who end up homeless or involved in crime in order to survive. We all make mistakes, however, some of them carry a bigger impact on our lives than others. Life isn't always fair and success requires a bit of luck. These people are just like anyone else though. They all dream like we do, but somewhere in life their paths unfortunately led them to where they are.

Be it the success story or the tragedy, we're all just regular blokes. Some of us find our calling, some fall into depravity, others might struggle to figure out what they're here for. We're all different yet we're all the same: people. Keeping this in mind, I realize that I too am then capable of doing extraordinary things as well. It's easy to say, "well, Stephen Hawking's a genius! Of course he's so successful", but that would be denying your own potential and is essentially an excuse to not do your best. So many successful people started out just like you and I: ordinary. They're not as special as we'd like to believe.

Even simple things can shine when looked at in the right way. We all have the potential and can do anything we put our minds to. It's just a matter of drive, inspiration, persistence, hard work, time, and a little luck.

                                                                                                                            Peace
Stars are ordinary
We're made from the same matter that composes the great stars of the cosmos. We're special, yet ordinary. Which we choose to be is a matter of perspective.
