YoM Day 171: learning the hard way

Yesterday, I talked about being open to the insights of others. Today is a new day.
"Experience is a hard teacher because she gives the test first, the lesson afterwards." - Vernon Sanders Law
I tend to be a very stubborn person. When it comes to things I feel really strongly and passionate about it's hard for me to change my perspective. I think the same could be said about most people. It's why political debates that get so heated generally never end well (both sides are too stuck in their ways). They say it's hard to teach an old dog new tricks, but it's also hard to teach something something when the student isn't willing to learn.

Life is fair in that it's open to teach anyone willing to learn. Take for example, biomimicry, which is the imitation of the models, systems, and elements of nature in our technology. Just by observing nature we were able to develop things like Velcro from burdock burrs, radar tech from the echolocation of bats and many sea animals, high-speed train designs from the kingfisher bird's air-resistant beak, etc. These are inventive ways in which life inspires us.

In a more personal way, life tends to teach us more abstractly. For example, when I was younger I never really thought much about the value in exercise other than being stronger and because I was told in school that I should so I don't get fat. Now that I exercise on a regular basis, I've learned a lot about life just from the act of weightlifting.

Weightlifting serves as a simple metaphor to life: you have to build yourself up to get to a certain point. There are no shortcuts. The iron bar doesn't lie to you and is fair. You either can lift the weight or you can't. If you want to lift it, you have to work hard for it. Sometimes you'll feel like you've hit a wall and can't seem to progress, but there's always a way and if you keep pushing yourself you'll eventually get stronger and reach the next level. The same is true with life. If you want to be successful, you have to build the necessary skills for whatever it is you want to do and work hard to get there. Life is hard just like squatting 100+ kg (200+ lbs) is hard for me (care to guess my weight?). But you have to keep pushing and never give up if you want to improve yourself. There are no shortcuts. You either get there or you don't.

There are so many examples of how life teaches us valuable lessons to incorporate into our lifestyles. We have to see the value in the things we're doing and the metaphors that come with them. It could be weightlifting, creating art, being a parent, etc. There's a lesson in everything we do.
It's just a matter of connecting the dots and drawing the comparisons.

learning the hard way
When we become open to learning the world becomes a treasure trove of knowledge waiting to be obtained.
