Beauty of the unexpected - YoM Day 322

Ten months ago I began a journey of practicing mindfulness every day and we've reached day 322. Yesterday, I talked about the complexity of emotions. Today is a new day.
"But life inevitable throws us curve balls, unexpected circumstances that remind us to expect the unexpected. I've come to understand these curve balls are the beautiful unfolding of both karma and current." - Carre Otis
I hung out with my Buddhist bros today and we went to a gathering where people shared their experiences with the practice and how their lives have changed as a result of practicing self-discipline and working toward self-betterment. A common thing that we talked about was how simply working hard isn't just enough. So many of us end up giving it 120% and still end up with unfortunate outcomes. Life can be cruel, but depending on how you choose to look at the world, there's something to be gained in anything we do.

One person talked about how despite working overtime and committing to everything in designing eyeglasses, they ended up not getting anywhere with their career. They eventually had to move back home in order to start over and try something different. The point wasn't that he made a mistake or wasn't good enough, rather, the path he chose just happened to not work out. Shit happens. However, the skills he developed and the experience he gained from that job ended up helping him find a new job in a completely different field (though still design related) and now he's doing way better. Another person shared their experience of going to school for film, but despite not being able to do that and ended up becoming a manager/agent for singers trying to promote themselves. Despite the change in career he loves what he does.

It's funny how life works. Sometimes not everything is aligned and that's why shit hits the fan. Maybe you met the right girl at the wrong time and you never ended up together, but years later end up with someone who ended up being an even better fit for you. Maybe you end up doing something completely different from what you intended to do, but it turns out this unexpected surprise was the best thing that ever happened to you. Maybe you feel lost and ended up trying something out just for the experience and it turns out to be something you end up extremely passionate about. I never planed to move to Japan in college, but after I graduated I figured it'd be nice to live there for a few years and planned to come back to the states. Now that I've been here for almost two years now I'm starting to feel the other way. So much for plans, right?

There's no real telling what the future has in store for us, so rather than worrying too much about success the more important thing is having set your sights on something in the first place. Even if it doesn't work out, the experiences we make add meaning to our lives and end up shaping who we are. Eventually we end up being able to find something only we can do. But it's kind of hard to plan a future around that if we don't know what that is. I think that's what make life beautiful. The unexpected is sometimes exactly what we need to set us on the right path. Being open minded to the possibilities just makes the transition a bit easier.

                                                                                                                  Peace
Unexpected
Not everything needs rhyme or reason to be beautiful. Life just has a way of working and it's on us to find what makes things shine.
