YoM Day 92: happiness is a skill

Yesterday, I talked about working for your happiness. Today is a new day.
"Happiness is a thing to be practiced, like the violin." - John Lubbock
When learning any new skill we have to practice it until it's second nature. It's how we learn how to speak, write, read, walk, anything. No skill comes gained without practice. I didn't become a pianist over night. I have to practice, practice, practice, and 10 years later I got to a level where I had learned all of the necessary skills in order to play any piece. I'm by no means a master, let alone a virtuoso, but with enough diligence and practice, I can pretty much play any piece I dedicate enough time to.

Happiness is something that is often associated with everything being alright. It's a feeling we strive to be in all of the time. Yet despite happiness being so strongly sought after by everyone, why is it it's so hard for some to simply be happy even if for a brief moment? When we're born we're not not. If anything, most babies cry when they're born. Infants don't have control over their emotions which is why they can so easily go from ecstatic to furious in a matter of minutes.

Happiness, like any emotion, is something we have to learn to control. Most people train themselves to control their anger, but never the opposite. Learning how to be happy even in the most terrible of situations is something most people never think to do, I think. Gratitude and appreciation are things I talk about a lot, and a big reason why practicing the two is beneficial is precisely because they are emotions linked with happiness. Practicing the two helps you see the positives in anything, which in turn trains you to see the good sides to any situation. This is essentially how you can be happy no matter what.

We can be happy by simply trying until it eventually becomes second nature.

It might take a lot of trial and error, but you eventually get the hang of things when you do it enough times.

  1. Today's assignment: notice when you experience something other than happiness. Try turning your attention back toward happiness in those moments.
