YoM Day 115: to be free

Yesterday, I talked about the regaining our curiosity for the world. Today is a new day.
"Think of Zen, of the Void, of Good and Evil, and you are bound hand and foot. Think only and entirely and completely of what you are doing in the moment and you are free as a bird." - R. H. Blyth
Our brains process millions of bits of data every second and performs just as many calculations without us having to think about it. These tasks are done automatically in the background while our conscious self, the "main window" goes on to live life outside of our mind and body. We're so advanced we cannot fully comprehend just how advanced we really are (but we are getting closer as AI development continues to advance). It's amazing.

Yet in some ways our brains are a double-edged sword. With some much processing power we become prone to overthinking and looking into things that aren't there. We all have dreams and want to do what we can to make them a reality. In the process we tend to think of a plan that will lead us toward success. We try calculating it as our brain does everything. However, in focusing on this plan we become less flexible to change and other potentially helpful influences. This leads us to missing out on so much of what life has to offer. We become bound by what we think we "should" be doing because we think we know what we want and we get stuck thinking of the future we want to live in rather than enjoying the present.

In the same way that postponing your homework until the last minute is just wishful thinking and gets nothing done, so is trying to become free, enlightened, good, rich, powerful, in the state of zen, etc. You won't get your homework done until you do something NOW. We live in the present, as such we must also be mindful of the present and what's going on. This is the first step toward independence - toward freedom.

However, to become free means to not try being free. To make it your goal makes it a contradiction. Instead, being free to me means to be completely you. Accepting and owning your flaws and gifts and doing what only you can do in this world. Being free to me means being free of expectations and going with the flow. Letting go of expectations means to focus on what we're doing now rather than how we're doing it. This makes us more aware of our actions and how they're affecting the world around us.

No judgement, no expectations. Just be.
