Eleven months ago I began a journey of practicing mindfulness every day and we've reached day 361. Yesterday, I talked about healing the heart. Today is a new day.
Take Albert Einstein. Most people just remember him as being one of the greatest minds of our time. But there's a story behind it. He spent YEARS working on his theory of relativity before he got any recognition for his work. His marriage went to the gutter, he lost his children, his peers didn't take him seriously, and he was alone in the belief that his work was meaningful. Despite the struggle he didn't give up and proved the haters wrong. He wasn't magically born amazing at physics and quantum mechanics. He had to work for it.
How about Stephen Hawking? He's no different. Prior to being diagnosed with ALS, he's been quoted describing his attitude toward school and life as, "boredom and feeling nothing was worth making an effort for". However, when faced with possible death within a few years something changed and he decided to sit down and start doing the things he wanted to accomplish. He not only worked hard, but he learned to focus.
The world is full of examples of great people working hard to get to where they were. Rarely is someone just handed a silver platter and it magically bears fruit. No. These people got there through hard work and focusing on their goals. If you wanna succeed, you need to keep your eyes on the prize and not let anyone tell you, "you can't".
It's easy to say someone was a "genius" when explaining their success, but I don't think that's really true. There are plenty of intelligent people who end up accomplishing nothing and "dumb" people who end up owning their own corporations. Being intelligent means nothing if you do nothing with your gifts. No excuses. In the same way, if you're just coasting through life how can you expect things to get better? Recognizing what you need to do to succeed and then doing it is what really makes someone "smart" to me. We all have an inner genius inside us that's waiting to break out and make a difference in the world. Being intelligent helps, sure, but hard work and determination can be a good substitute.
The next time you see a Steve Jobs or a Nikola Tesla, are they a genius or did they just work really hard to get to where they are?
Peace
"If people knew how hard I worked to achieve mastery, it wouldn't seem so wonderful after all." - MichelangeloOne pet peeve of mine is how some people automatically write successful people off as "genius" or "talented" without even knowing how those people got to where they were. It's like the ultimate excuse for why you're not successful and they are. To me, that's no different than lying to yourself and doing nothing to make your situation better.

How will you bring out your inner genius?
Peace
Could be math, could be music, could be basket weaving. We all have the power, it's just a question of how we bring it out. |
