Shadows Can't Hurt You - YoM Day 349

Eleven months ago I began a journey of practicing mindfulness every day and we've reached day 349. Yesterday, I talked about being a good friend. Today is a new day.
"When there is no enemy within, the enemies outside cannot hurt you." - African Proverb
One thing I've learned from browsing internet forums as a child was that people can be brutal. When left to their own devices, some people will take you out without hesitation and they can and will rip you to shreds if you let them. Some people get used to it and don't take it personally and some can't handle it. While the internet is full of great things, it also enables the darker sides of humanity to flourish.

Regardless of how people view us, what really matters is how we view ourselves. There will always be haters and haters will hate, so there's no point in investing everything in caring about whether they like you or not. What's more important is whether we're comfortable in our own skin. Whether it's self-doubt or self-consciousness, the main thing holding us back and keeping us from achieving our potential is the self. In the end, if we don't learn to like or accept ourselves, we'll never truly be happy. It won't matter if we become rich, having the perfect partner would feel meaningless, and  you'll find that nothing can ever fill the gaping hole that's in your heart.

That said, people CAN affect us if we let them. While we don't need validation from others in order to achieve our goals, we can treat peoples' opinions of us as tools. We can either use to further motivate ourselves or bring us down. However, they are just aids that help enforce our foundation (our self-esteem).

If we lack that solid foundation, then it doesn't matter how much people praise us, we'll still feel like shit. Likewise, if we're already negative about ourselves, negative judgements from others can easily make our opinion of ourselves worse. On the other hand, if we love ourselves, no amount of praise will make a difference (it won't matter) and no amount of negative energy can break us. We become the unstoppable force - the immovable object. If the light is strong enough, no shadow can withstand its brightness.

Every major obstacle I've faced was possible to overcome and the main factor in whether I overcame them or not was my mindset. In choosing to believe myself I always managed to find a way, even if I just barely pulled through. In observing this pattern I've gained more confidence in myself and it's helped me see that the only thing holding me back was myself. Whenever I thought I couldn't do something it'd end up creating a self-fulfilling prophecy. Don't let yourself be held down by your shadow. We are both our greatest asset and our worst enemy. Which we become is ultimately a choice.

What will you choose to be?

The shadow is a reflection of the self. It will only hurt you no more than you are hurting yourself.
